THE LODGER

The Lodger
Ian MacIntosh
Role: Animator / Illustrator

For The Lodger, I created pre-show and intermission artwork for the opera’s set and video design, following the creative direction of Ian MacIntosh.

My work combined 3D animation, 2D illustration, and procedural Grease Pencil techniques to create Victorian-inspired, cross-hatched assets. I also illustrated layered scenic elements in Procreate, prepared for animation within the wider video design.

Alongside the animated assets, I illustrated a series of scenic elements in Procreate using the same highly detailed cross-hatching style. These were layered and prepared for the video designer to animate between, forming part of the pre-show and intermission visual content.

The visual language was inspired by Victorian illustration, with a detailed cross-hatching style that informed both the animation and scenic artwork. To achieve this, I developed a hybrid 3D/2D workflow, building assets in Blender and using Grease Pencil to draw directly onto the forms. I then animated the individual strokes procedurally, allowing for greater creative control and art direction throughout the process.
